Trash to Class: A Green Fashion Show

LaFortune Ballroom

Students and members of the Notre Dame community will learn about how to conserve resources and why more sustainable habits are important (and in vogue), while male and female models demonstrate eco-friendly outfits made from recycled fabrics. Select items will be on silent auction after the show.

Admission: $5 (Tickets on sale at the LaFortune Box Office)

Proceeds will benefit the Majora Carter Fund: Sustainable South Bronx

The Graduate Research Symposium will showcase the exemplary work of Notre Dame graduate students to the University community. Participants will interact with graduate students and learn about the innovative work they complete during their tenure at Notre Dame. Research will be displayed from all divisions of The Graduate School with a special division dedicated to the topic of this year's Notre Dame Forum on Sustainable Energy. All are welcome. UND Downtown Lunch and Learn Eco Film Series

12:05 p.m., Notre Dame Downtown Crossroads Gallery

The University of Notre Dame’s Downtown Lunch and Learn Eco Film Series will kick off Thursday (Nov. 6) at the Notre Dame Downtown Crossroads Gallery, 217 S. Michigan St., South Bend, with the film “Six Degrees Could Change the World.” The screening begins at 12:05 p.m. and is free and open to the public. “Six Degrees Could Change the World” challenges its viewers to rethink the potential disaster of global warming. Alec Baldwin narrates the 90-minute film that was produced by National Geographic. MPA Architects, Notre Dame’s Office of Community Relations, and WVPE 88.1 are sponsoring the November series which includes three films. The remaining Eco Film screenings are “Human Footprint,” a look at how much a single life affects the planet on Nov. 13, and “The 11th Hour,” a film about the permanent footprint that all humans leave on the planet on Nov. 20. All screenings are scheduled to take place in the Crossroads Gallery at 12:05 p.m.

Sen. Richard Lugar toured the Notre Dame Energy Center and spoke with students and faculty about their energy-related research at Notre Dame. Senator Lugar then made a campus-wide presentation at 3:00 pm in Washington Hall on "Energy Security and U.S. Foreign Policy." During the presentation, he presented GreeND, a University of Notre Dame student organization, with the Energy Patriot Award, which honors a student, professional, scholar or member of the business community who has demonstrated leadership and initiative in taking concerete action to improve America's energy security. Air Force research office honors two young engineering faculty. The University of Notre Dame’s Vikas Tomar, assistant professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering, and Huili (Grace) Xing, assistant professor of electrical engineering, are two of the 39 engineers and scientists selected by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFSOR) as part of the 2008 Young Investigator Program (YIP).

On the road to an efficient electric car. The day may come when we pull into our garages in easily rechargeable electric cars. But the hype surrounding the release of GM’s electric Volt notwithstanding, University of Notre Dame engineering professor Paul McGinn’scurrent project list is proof that the road to that point has many intriguingtwists, and more turns than just the ride home from the dealer showroom.

Second Annual Energy Week to focus on sustainability. The University of Notre Dame will observe its second annual Energy Week Sept. 17 to 24 (Wednesday to Wednesday) with the theme “Be Enlightened,” in conjunction with “Sustainable Energy: A Notre Dame Forum,” to be held on campus Sept. 24.

Seed fund projects focus on clean energy. In support of its mission to pursue the development of abundant and inexpensive energy sources that do not harm the environment, the University of Notre Dame’s Energy Center has announced that three projects pursuing novel concepts in clean energy will be supported through the center’s new Seed Fund program.

Notre Dame to host energy policy conference. The University of Notre Dame and the Notre Dame Energy Center will host engineers, scientists and state and national leaders responsible for formulating and implementing energy policy July 7 (Monday) at a conference in McKenna Hall.

Joan Brennecke named Stieglitz lecturer. Brennecke joins the list of lecturers that includes 13 Nobel Laureates and more than 35 members of the national Academy of Sciences. She is the first chemical engineer to be honored.
