2007 Slatt Fellows

The following undergraduate students at the University of Notre Dame were awarded fellowships from the Vincent P. Slatt Endowment for Undergraduate Research in Energy Systems and Processes in 2007:

Joseph Basconi, sophomore in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, analyzed the impact of Daylight Savings Time on energy consumption in Indiana. His adviser was Jeffrey C. Kantor, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering. View Report

Patrick Brown, sophomore in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, collaborated with his adviser Prashant V. Kamat, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, and studied single-wall carbon nanotube based photochemical solar cells, focusing on the desired properties for harvesting light energy. View Article

Shawn Coleman, sophomore in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, investigated first-principles prediction of active sites for catalytic hydrogenation, providing insight into the development of improved catalytic materials and processes. His adviser was William F. Schneider, associate professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering.

Kyle Kron, sophomore in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, guided by John E. Renaud, professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering, and Vikas Tomar, assistant professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering, performed finite element analyses of SiC-Si3N4 nanoceramic composites for high-temperature structural applications, such as earth and space based power generation systems.

Felipe Witchger, junior pursuing energy studies and economics, focused on biofuel development and sustainability in Latin America. His adviser was David F. Ruccio, professor of economics and policy studies.
