Research Emphasis: safe nuclear waste storage.
Jeremy B. Fein is an aqueous geochemist, using chemical thermodynamics to model the transport of mass in geologic systems. Energy-related research projects include ones that aim to determine the controls on radionuclide mobility in the environment. Measurements of uranyl-bearing mineral solubilities not only provide constraints on the mobility of uranium in water that comes in contact with weathered waste material, but also yields thermodynamic properties of the minerals in question. Fein's group also conducts a range of projects aimed at understanding the effect of bacterial adsorption on the speciation and mobility of uranium in the subsurface.
